A fine example of American Craftsmanship, the Scepter Cylindrical Grinders were built 100% in the U.S.A. and designed to provide an uncomplicated grinding system at an economical price. Both models featured annealed cast-iron construction throughout the entire machine, including the base, wheelhead, saddle and table. This quality construction provided the Scepter with a lifetime of stability and accuracy. The special saddle infeed construction and table featured a pre-loaded anti-friction way system, for extreme accuracy of movement of multi-diameter parts.
Quality Construction
K.O. Lee grinders were built from high quality castings. Each machine was designed, manufactured and assembled at the same location. A thorough inspection was performed by a Quality Assurance team during and after machine build. In-house run-offs and quality inspections by the customer were welcomed.
Scepter CNC Cylindrical Grinder
The Scepter was equipped with a NUM 1020 CNC control which provided simultaneous movement of the machine's two (2) axes. The table and wheelhead axes were driven by AV Digital servo motors via precision ground ballscrews.
The Wheelhead axis was equipped with linear glass scale feedback for increased accuracy. The Scepter offered a grinding capacity of 10" (250 mm) swing with 20" (500 mm) between the machine to be used for center and chuck work.
Machine accuracy was improved by the use of pre-loaded linear guideways on the table and wheelhead axes. All linear way bearings and ballscrews were lubricated by a central air/oil lubrication system, providing positive pressure protection to these critical areas. A 5-HP (3.75 kw) spindle motor drove the machine's 14" (350 mm) diameter grinding wheel.
The Scepter control provided graphical representation of grinding and dressing cycles for quick and easy setup. A standard 2D CAD package enabled the control to be programmed at the machine for complex wheel forms and contour generation on the workpiece. Background programming was also available as well as up-loading and down-loading via the RS 232 port.
